THE NEW MAIN STREET USA: THE LIGHTWEIGHT WOOD FRAME MONSTER

$300.00

Main Street is changing, and our fireground preparation must keep pace. Large apartment buildings and mixed-use developments built with lightweight wood-frame construction present challenges that every firefighter and fire officer must understand before the alarm sounds.

This 2- hour classroom presentation examines these buildings through the responsibilities of engine, truck, and rescue companies. Topics include lightweight trusses and engineered wood components, concealed voids, cockloft fire extension, collapse potential, and the capabilities and limitations of sprinkler protection. Operational discussions cover water supply, standpipe operations, long hose stretches, forcible entry, search, ventilation, air management, and aerial ladder access.

Special attention is given to long hallways, limited escape routes, inaccessible interior courtyards, rescue challenges, and buildings still under construction. The course emphasizes preincident walkthroughs, coordinated operations, clear communication, and recognizing deteriorating conditions that require a change in strategy.

Presented by Greco Emergency Logistics LLC, this class connects building construction to practical fireground decisions—helping firefighters recognize the challenges of the “new Main Street” before they are operating inside it.
